What message would you like to give to all believers that work with music ministry in the church?

Be encouraged. Music is a powerful tool and you’re doing great work. Be content with small things. It will grow if it’s supposed to, and if it’s not – God knows what he’s doing.

I truly believe that music ministry is a powerful tool, no matter what kind of music it is. It could be old traditional, although it’s not my cup of tea and it’s not for me, though it is for others; it could be heavy duty rock, which is the kind of thing I relate to, and it’s very appropriate for some.

But the mi...

When did you start doing solo shows?

Oh my gosh… back in 1991 or 1992. Part of it was because Petra would tour 3 months in the fall, 3 months in the spring and I was getting a paycheck but not doing anything for half a year. It was like “I can work on my house forever, but I really need to start doing something with all this time. I can go out and do solo shows… I can go and do solo shows where Petra couldn’t do it because the venue is too small.” The idea hit… and it worked!...

How were you doing solo shows before?

I was using Petra tapes and putting one tape in at a time. I started out using the accompaniment tapes that you buy in the stores, and I finally went “this is too expensive!” So I went to the record company and said, “do you have the tracks that you make the tapes out of? Do you have a dat of the whole album? Could I have one?”

So I started getting them right off the board, and thereafter I made sure that John and Dino got me a copy of the same album but without the lead vocals. So I always h...

Why did you choose to record solo albums? How God has put this in your heart?

I started going out and doing solo dates with Petra music, and in between songs I started speaking about what was on my heart. Song ideas started coming along so I started putting them to paper, and I realized I had something to say myself. I had never considered that before, because Bob Hartman and the others were such good writers with Petra that we really didn’t need me, but I started feeling like “You know what? I’ve got something to say.” It’s easier not to write, but I felt I should go out...

A lot of people and pastors still say that rock is devil music and that the musicians are only artists. On the other hand, we have seen that many gospel bands are acting like secular bands. What do you think about that?

To the critics that say all rock & roll is from hell – rock & roll is just a music style. The people that play rock & roll – what are they singing about and what is their philosophy in life? How do they act on and off stage? It’s not the music that dictates where they’re at – it’s their actions and reactions to life.

A secular artist that is out there just to satisfy his own needs and wants is fair game to the enemy (Satan). So yes – he’s the enemy’s tool. I guarantee the enemy is taking car...

Can you explain how Petra has survived all these years?

Very easily. If you know the history of Petra, you know that we’ve gone through many personnel changes over the years. But the direction and the purpose of the band have never changed, and that’s why it’s lasted as long as it has. The ministry has always been first, it always will be and I think God honors it because of that....

On the song "Take You On" from "Unfit for Swine," almost at the end of the song suddenly you stop singing and we can only hear the guitar sound, and then we can hear a voice. What are you exactly saying in that part?

Well, first of all, actually, that wasn’t me who said it. It was Dann Huff.

What happened was that George Cocchini did the solo and right at the end of it, Dann Huff wanted everyone to know that it was George who did it. So in one of the mix downs somewhere, he decided to go “By George!” meaning George Cocchini. It was a one-take solo; George is fantastic, Dann is fantastic, so it got to the point where Dann wanted to let everyone know who did solos: that was George’s big solo and so he did ...

Which album - SHAKE or UNFIT FOR SWINE - do you like better on the whole, and which one was more fun for you to record?

Shake was more fun; it was more natural. It was sort of a combination of songs that I’ve had from a long time.

Unfit for Swine was an album that I tried to do something that was foreign to me. We tried to do a music style that was foreign to me – more aggressive, more current, and it felt a little unnatural, but I really like some of the writing on this album. I think they’re excellent songs. It’s a shame that it wasn’t as well received as Shake.

Some people love Unfit and say Shake’s OK...
